CHARLES VERSCHUUREN, JR. (1891-1955) [BILLIARD HALL.]
42 1/2x30 1/2 inches, 108x77 1/2 cm. Kotting, Amsterdam.
Condition A-: minor restored loss in upper right corner; minor creases and restoration in image.
Born in The Netherlands, Verschuuren was an illustrator, cartoonist and part-time painter. He found work with the Kotting printing firm in Amsterdam in 1914, and is credited with having designed over 100 posters over the next seven years before moving his family to Ohio in 1922. The following year, he moved to New York City where he contributed many illustrations to the Brooklyn Eagle's Sunday Magazine through 1933. He also designed posters for the WPA and briefly worked for the Walt Disney Company. This image of a billiard hall is less stylized and Art Deco-influenced than many of his more well-known works, but showcases Verschuuren's talent for composing an energetic and colorful composition. rare.
